Basements support laminated beams or steel

I have a basement that the upper floor is supported by wood 4x4 post I would like to remove 4 of the posts and install laminated beams or steel I-beams for support. This would give me one big open room. If anyone has info I would like to know which is the best way do this

Please consult a structural engineer. The strength of the beam is not the only consideration. By removing a post, you transfer the weight supported by it to the adjacent supports. It does you no good to have a very strong beam if the footings fail.
