Question Suspended ceiling in basement

This is really a "basement ceiling" question, but since there isn't a "Ceiling" forum I thought I'd ask it here...

I am planning to install a suspended ceiling with 2' x 4' panels in my basement, which is approx. 20' x 12'.

My question concerns the installation of the ceiling. The directions say I should attach the main beams (on which the 2 x 4 panels will rest) to the walls and then use hang wires to suspend the same main beams from the ceiling joists.

What would be the problem if I skipped the first step and just suspended the main beams from the joists by means of the hang wires? I realize the wires will have to bear the weight of the entire ceiling, which may or may not be a problem.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

The first step in a suspended ceiling is to put up an "L" shaped piece of metal around the perimeter of the room that establishes the height of the ceiling. Then the main runners go up, and they are the ones suspended by the wires. The "l" shaped piece hold the tiles at the perimeter. If, you didn't want to do that, you could also use a piece of molding around the perimeter. Try going to this site.

Thanks for the info. I wanted to avoid the hassle of attaching the L-shaped metal bracket all around the perimeter. It had not occured to me that the bracket would support the panels at the perimeter. Molding would sure be easier to work with.
