basement subfloor necessary

I'm in the process of planning to refinish my basement. Is it really necessary to install a subfloor in the basement, either a plywood or some of the newer types of subflooring?

Or would it suffice to just install a good resilient carpet and thick pad. I realize that the concrete absorbs a lot of the heat and can get cold, so I'm inquiring for different opinions......

thanks !

Use an 8-pound pad

I live in the mid-west. I finished my basement and the flooring is berber carpet over an 8-pound pad. The floor is very comfortable.

BTW - insulate the exterior walls.
