What should the humidifier be set at? We have it on 6 now,is that about right?

Do you mean a dehumidifier? Most folks have too much humidity in their basements and must use a dehumidifier. Humidifiers increase humidity levels in homes. Humidity levels are measured with a humidistat which will tell you what your humidity level is and what action should be taken. Some caution against the use of humidifiers because if not properly cleaned can cause health problems. Most dehumifiers are equipped with a de-humidistat to measure humidity levels. Normal operation calls for the room humidity to be between 50% and 60%. Check your owner's manual for what the setting numbers mean on your equipment. Different manufacturers have different settings and controls.
