Question Digging out

We have a basement with a low ceiling - about 6'5" with lots of pipes and electrical run below the joists. We are considering digging out an extra 8-12". Any ideas on the cost if we hire someone to do this? Pros/cons/suggestions? Still searching for a decent ceiling option if we don't go this root. With the pipes butt up against the joists - even a track ceiling is going to be tough!

Cannot tell you much on cost since we do not know the size of your basement, how far to haul the dirt etc. I would consider a hanging ceiling, that way your pipes will not interfere.

Jack - Long Island, NY - about 30 ft by 30 ft - not far w/the dirt - right out onto driveway. Hope you could give me a ballpark figure - thanks.
