Unhappy Sump Pump Blues

I am getting water in one corner of my basement that moves towards the sump hole in another corner, but then flows off to another portion of the floor. It looks like the opening to the sump hole is higher than the area where the water finally settles.

How can I get the water to run into the hole instead of settling elsewhere?

I know this feeling well. I have a basement with a high water table and a bomb shelter circa 1963. The original sump pump was in the bomb shelter in the lowest corner but behind the footing. My water table flows from the back of the house to the front where the sump pump was, but before it could get there it seeped through the walls and even the floor. I dug out and installed two new sump wells and installed top of the line sump pumps and all is well. The only other real option would be to cut in a french drain along the basement wall and backfill with stone.

I live in NJ too. My last open item is to get some battery back-up pumps in case i loose power. Better safe than sorry. Now I have a DRY and finished basement.

backup sump pump

Hello,
In reading your reply about needing to get a backup sump pump, I thought I'd let you know of a backup pump I just bought at Home Depot. IT,s designed to be a backup pump, not primary, because it runs on city water (40PSI minimum, so if on well water forget it). The pump's float opens the valve to let city water through and forcefully syphon the reservoir. Claims up to 600 gal per hour. I tried in a 40 gal trash can prior to installation and emptied in less than a minute!
Price is less than $90 US ($150 here in Canada)

Hope this helps

fIRST SUMP PUMP SHOULD BE PLACED AT THE LOWEST POINT IN BASEMENT. tAKE A READING FROM THE UPPER FLOOR JOISTS TO BASEMENT FLOOR.

2. IF YOU ARE HAVING WATER ENTER FROM WALL FLOOR JOINT CHANCES ARE YOU HAVE A DRAINAGE BREAKDOWN.

SUMP PUMPS RELIEVE PRESSURE UNDER THE FLOOR AND ACT AS A COLLECTOR FOR DRAINAGE SYSTEMS.

3. WATER BUILDS UP ON OUTSIDE WALL AND BREAKS THROUGH WHERE FLOOR MEETS WALL.

iF YOUR LOOKING AT BATTERY BACKUP MAKE SURE YOU GET A DEEP CELL MARINE BATTERY AND ALSO A WATER WATCH ALARM.
