gas smell in basement
There is the smell of gas in my basement. My gas company sez its not there gas. They say its not even natural gas. What else could be causing this gas smell.

I have the same problem with smelling sewer gas in my basement from time to time.
I read somewhere that pouring water down your floor drains wil help with this. Is this true?
My concern is to finish off the basement and continue to have the gas smell every once in a while.

gas smell in basement
There are no drain pipes in this room with the smell.
The room is seperate from the back room that has all the plumbing. There are 4 rooms in the finished basement, but this is the only room with the smell. I thought that maybe a crack in foundation might let in odor, but there is no crack when I ripped up the rug.
The only way odor is getting into room that I can see is
1 light socket in wall
2 light fixtures in cieling
3 maybe through sheetrock
Thanx for the help,
Dan

You need to isolate the source
Dan, you need to isolate the source. Where is the smell the strongest? If there are no pipes at all in the ceiling/walls then you may have a leak somewhere.
One other possibility comes to mind. You may have a dead animal in the wall. Its happened to people before.
Still, its going to take a lot of looking and sniffing on your part to help find the source.
