Chimney Cover-up

I am in the process of finishing my attic for a spare room. My problem is the exposed brick of the chimney. What are my options for covering the chimney. Can I cover it with sheetrock, if so, is there a special sheetrock I should use and how much space do I have to allow between the brick and the sheetrock? Can I apply a thin coat of mortor then paint it, is so how do I do it correctly, type of mortor, type of paint?

Thanks,
HandiLady

Sheetrock

Not knowing all the details of your chimnry, I"ll offer the following. I would attach treated wood lath strips to the chimney using appropriate masonry anchors, such as TapCon screws, Then simply attach the sheetrock over them and finish. Heat should not be much of a factor in a properly built chimney. I would not use masonry nails to attach the lathes, as these can break bricks, and mortar joints with the pounding. With a 3/4 inch thick lathe, I would use a 1 1/2 inch to 2 inch TapCon screw, no longer than 2 inch. You can get TapCons at Lowes. Hope this helps.
