Back up to Sump

Have a sump pump in floor of basement. It was installed at time floor was poured so drainage pipes empty into it. I assume it is a standard sump installation. Last week the pump failed and my basement was about 1 inch underwater because of all the rain we had. The water came through the expansion joint in the 2 slabs of poured concete. I guess the pump usually handled this water. My question is, what would be the best method to back up the new sump I just put in? Certainly do not want the same thing to happen in the future. Right now the basement is unfinished but I plan to finish soon. Can a back up pump get tied in somehow without cutting into the cement? Some other method? Any suggestions appreciated.

Had a similar problem several years ago. I bought a 9V battery powered alarm that would go off if the water level in the pit got too high. Also bought a second pump and stored it in my shop in case the pump failed in the middle of the night when stores weren't open.

They also make a "back-up" sump pump that has a battery back up and can be installed in conjunction with your main sump. They carry it at HD, I believe it is called the "Basement Watchdog". This would give you the added security of not having to replace the pump in the middle of the night.

Good Luck!
