Unhappy basement crack leak

During a recent heavy rain water came thru a small crack on my wall in my unfinished basement. The ground outside the spot has moved away from the foundation about 1/2 in. Should I try to repair the inside or tackle the outside first?? Should I get this looked at right away?? Thanks for any help.

Leaky basement

Make sure gutters and downspouts are clear and direct excessive water away from the foundation of the house. Make sure soil around the house is sloped to direct excessive rainfall away from the foundation. Cracks in basement walls can be filled with hydraulic cement. The best time to check out problems is to go outside during a heavy rain to see what happens during excess rainfall.

If at all possible, start on the outside. It is much easier to keep it form going in than it is to keep it from coming in. The pressure ( which isn't much ) is much harder to handle inside. I fought with it several years.
