Question Michigan style basement

HELP!!!! What can you do with a Michigan style basement? Can this space ever be used as living space or is it just a wasted space? Please let me know if anything can be done.

It looks like it is just hard dirt. I have tried to get that questions answered and I am getting no where. We are looking at a old home as a fixer upper and have never seen anything like this. The description states MICHIGAN BASEMENT. Looks like a hole in the ground to me.

That is another name for a dirt basement. I have one under a portion of my own home. They were left as dirt to keep the milk and such cool in the old days. Yes, they can be finished off, but quite expensive. I have done three this year already. They do turn out nice though, but a mess during construction.
