basement cost? Day light basement?

What would it cost to add a basement to a house plan where the main floor was 2400 square feet? I am talking about builders cost. Also, what is a "daylight basement"?

thanks

I hope you are talking about a home that isn't built yet. I suspect the answer depends on so many factors as to make most guesses questionable: soil type, local codes, local labor costs, local materials costs, water table, lot accessibility, lot terrain, shape (how far off of a simple rectangle), annual rainfall, sewer depth, etc. It also depends on whether a design already exists for your house with a basement, or whether such a design would need to be created from scratch. Even if you knew the builder's cost, the only thing that matters to you is builder's price. The builder is probably going to give you a "take it or leave it" price -- the price at which he doesn't care much whether you take it or leave it.

Bottom line is that I certainly don't know. Maybe somebody else here does.

A daylight basement is one in which some part of the basement wall is above grade. How much of the wall and how far above grade? However little the marketing department thinks it can get away with. Daylight basements are more common on sloped lots.

Thanks. Yes, an unbuilt house. The builder is my brother in law who is going to build us a house for cost. He is out of town for 2 weeks so I would normally just ask him. The reason I asked is we found some house plans we really like and I was just curious as to what it would cost (builder cost) for an normal unfinished basement. We live in the south. I was thinking about $10k extra but wasn't sure.

Even though I could help you, I will not. You have a contractor, ask him. If he is gone, wait until he gets back. We certainly are not going to stir up a fight between relatives. Just a note, your figures are low.

Adding a basement to an existing house isn't the greatest idea in the world, but it's done all the time. This is one of Jack's regular jobs.

Yikes, didn't know it was even possible. I guess you really have to want a basement to do that.
