derailer problem

got a cheaper bike from Dick's sporting goods a couple years ago. it is a 12 speed mountain bike. the bike clicks a lot in the rear while pedaling and goes away when i turn the handle slightly to switch gears but then comes back. the dreailer probably needs adjusting but i am not sure how you do it. any suggestions.

Question friction shifters?

Friction shifters...all the adjustments you do are on your thumb, all the rear derailluer does is the movements you make with your thumb shifters. You need to do little afterward follow adjustments so chain doesn't rub on the derailluer cage?

Yes your der is in need of adjustments. It would also be a good idea at this point to change your cables and housing. If your der is moving whn you turn the bars then your cable housing is too short. However if you have never replaced your cables and housing then it is time.
Here is a useful link.
