Bike rack
I have a moderately sized one car garage and wonder if anyone has a suggestions how to store 3 bikes. I've seen them hung by their rims but I wonder if it has any effect on the wheel after a prolonged period?

OK to hang by rims
Hanging the bikes by their rims is not a problem if the rims are in good shape to begin with. A bicycle actually "hangs" from the top part of the rim, which gets its strength from the tensile strength of the spokes.
The difficulty may be access to the bikes, though: if the bike is suspended from the ceiling a tall person will be needed to retrieve the bike!
I made a rack with hangers from Home Deep. The hangers have 2 "arms" that support the top tube; the hanger itself screws onto a 1x4. I adapted the design from a picture I saw at either Performance.com or Nashbar.com. The base of the 1x4 is fixed; the top part "floats" on 1/4" threadstock with screws simultaneously pressing downward on the 1x4 and pressing upward against a board that contacts the ceiling.

Thanks for your response. I can't visualize your setup based on your description although I know the hook you are describing. Does you bike hang upright from the ceiling or is it standing vertically against a wall? I dropped by Nashbar and looked at their racks but not sure if your inspiration was featured there.

This link to PerformanceBike.com gives the general idea.

If you'd like I'll send pictures of the floating brace I used in my design.
By chance I also ran across a rack at another site:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=2628
...altho I've never seen one or used this one. It does look like it uses a fair amount of floor space, but it may do a better job of storing your 3 bikes.

Thanks for the links! I did take a look and then some. I am beginning to seriously consider those hoists. Looks a bit more complicated to install but raising it that high does make for more space in my garage I wonder if they have some safety mechanism that prevents them from falling down if you accidentally let go.
Please do send me a picture of your setup.

cyclezen has it right about having good rims, etc. I found out the hard way just how much damage cheap ones can cause...
As for storing bikes, I'm currently using a homemade setup: Basically the bike rests on the back tire and the front is secured to the garage wall via a hook. But the hook is slightly elevated, so back tire doesn't have to take ALL the weight (and neither does the hook).
Not at all sure if this is hurting the bike (doubt it) but I do know it's the best solution right now, since our garage is so dang small.
