The chain is like 2cm from the spokes but I'm only on 3rd gear. Do I need to flare out the end I had to bend back in from an accident? I'm not sure it looks like that's the way it needs to go
Did it go to 1st before or is this a new derailleur? If so then I'd suspect the frame isn't in the right position to allow the derailleur to reach far enough. You can confirm by moving it and if it travels too far in the other direction (low gear) then the whole derailleur is shifted out of position. If it's a new derailleur then maybe that model doesn't have enough travel range to hit all the gears.
How would you propose I bend it back straight. The mount hole for the rear derailleur. I was thinking get similar sized metal rod from home depot and cut threads on it to fit in there to put in there and bend it. But not sure if there's a better method someone else has. Any suggestions?

I tried to clean it per many youtube suggestions to no avail. I don't think it has to do with the "pawls" not catching. Though I could be wrong.I really don't know. Anyone familiar with the inner workings of these?
