Restringing a traverse curtain rod?

The string on the traverse curtain rod was getting really frayed. So I decided to fix it. After studying the rod for a bit it looked straightforward enough. So I got me some string and set upon fixing it. Now instead of splitting in the middle and going left and right both sides either go right or left depending on how I pull the string. These are old traverse rods from the 70's but I'm hoping the prinicipal is still the same. I've posted this on a couple of different "do it yourself" websites and so far no one's been able to help me. If anyone out there can help me I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

It's really frustrating, isn't it?

When I restring a traverse rod, I first get a pencil and paper and sketch the string path before removing the old string. If you have another rod, with string intact, similar to the one you're having trouble with, just make such a sketch and use it as a guide in restringing this one. Hope this helps......Jay
