Installing a programmable thermostat

I'm installing a programmable thermostat. I removed the old one this morning and there were two wires coming out of the wall -- a red one and a white one. Supposedly, the instructions say, that colors don't necessarily matter, that those wires should be labeled by some letters. I didn't see any letters in the back of the old thermostat where the wires were connected -- and in any case, it's too late now because everything has already been disconnected. (I should've read the instructions before disconnecting!) The new thermostat, of course, is supposed to be connected in some way based on what those letters are. As I said, I couldn't find any letters anywhere, so what do I do? Do the colors have meaning? Does red correspond to some letter and white to another? Or is my only option now trial and error? Thank you.

If it for heat only the Red and White are the right wires and the right colors. Just put your 2 wires on the R and W terminals and you should be set.
