Hot Water Boiler Banging on Start Up??

Hi,

I have a hot water boiler that heats 3 floors. This is the first time I tried to start up the boiler. I opened all the values, made sure water was going through.
After about 3 or 4 minutes.
The pump kicks in and there is a loud banging noise coming from the pipes right above the boiler. Freaked me out and I shut the boiler switch to off. ( pilot still burning after shutting off switch )

Is the banging noise normal?
Will go away or should it go away after a few minutes.

any help would greatly appreciated??
Thanks

The heat from the water probably made the pipes expand too rapidly. Open the valve slowky and let the heat build up slowly. Good luck.

Have to admit I was a little confused when you said the pipes were full when the pump kicked on. If the water filling the pipes was cold and the pump started pushing hot water through them, then the temperature change is what caused the noise.Expansion of pipes. Once a warmer temp is established it won't bang anymore.
