Expansion Tank Draining/Emptying?

Hi,

I just bought an 84 yr old house with boiler/radiator heat. The boiler expansion tank is mounted in the attic. I've read that the expansion tank in this type of older "un-pressurized" system should be emptied annually. How do I drain this type of tank? Also, what sort of conditioner should be added to the water to help protect the system's pipes?

Thanks. Steven

Id say you have to look around to see just how you can drain the expansion tank there if need be . If you tap on it does it sound like it has water in it Shut the auto fill off when you do try and drain it and be sure to turn it back on.
Now for the water . In steam boilers yes a water conditioner you need. But on hot water boilers I dont use any. By all rights the water in there just stays the same all the time. No new "stuff" in the water to eat at the pipes
