combi boiler keeeps igniting

I have a vaillant combi boiler approx 10 years old. After use of hot water, shower etc. the boiler frequently keeps cycling (lighting for a few seconds then going out repetitively) but not always. When it does the only way to stop it is to switch the boiler off. Can you tell me what the problem might be?

From what you have said i think the boiler is sticking in hot water mode and because there is no flow of water to the taps the boiler will keep igniting and then knocking off as it over heats. If it is an early model of Vaillant Sine 18 there is a diaphragm and spindle that can become stuck in the water section also the servovalve above it can also become stuck.
