difference in boilers?

I have a single line steam radiator system and I need to replace the boiler...what is the difference between a steam boiler and a hot water boiler...can the same boiler be used for either.....I have a chance to get a used boiler from a remodel job that is only 8 years old...this was from a hot water system....this hydronic boiler is a carrier boiler is this possible to use in my system

Steam boiler

Some boilers can be used for either, some are dedicated.

the boiler I am looking at is a hydronic boiler ...guess I will just have to check with the manufacturer to see if this is a dedicated boiler or not...thanks for your response
