What type of transformer are we talking about? Is it one to power zone valves or an ignition transformer? The most common causes for zone vavle transformers to burn out are a short in the wiring or too light a transformer for the load.

it was a honeywell universal at40a 1121. we change the thermostat wires, and we tried using phone transformers just to see was it still going to burn out and it did. but the way he hook it up was through a socket he didn't take it from the circuit box. it stays fired up for about 20 min then it goes out. my gas val say millivolts only do they make transformers in millivolts? thanks for responding

If you are trying to power millivolt gas valve wirh a transformer, it is no wonder you are burning out transformers. You have already burned out the gas valve. Stop now before you blow yourself up. Call a professional.
