Steam Pipe Insulation

What should I insulate my steam pipes with in the basement? I called a place that sells 3 ft lenths of fiberglass pipe insulation. It's $3.88 per foot! That price is for 1.5 inch thickness and 3 inch pipes. Can I buy a roll of some type of fiberglass insulation and tape it on?
Thanks,
David

Insulation

The fiberglass pipe insulation is specificly made for what you want to do. I used the 3/4" on pipes in my crawl space. You could wrap the pipes but you won't get anywhere near the R value you do with the pre made stuff.
