HVAC Mechanic needs help !

I am a hvac mechanic in a rural area , and don't have anyone nearby that I can ask to help. I need to learn as much as I can about steam, I have asked my employer to send me to school , but it doesn't look like thats gonna happen. Can anyone direct me to some good online traing sites , or just online referance that might help. I've inherited a steam boiler in a school (the other mechanic died a couple of years ago ) I'm having problems I don't understand ,and I don"t want to loose all their buisness. THANKS ,doctorD

Training

I don't know of any online training for steam unless maybe thru some of the boiler manufacturers. Dan Holohan has some excellent books.

steam boiler noise "dying dinosaur"

A customer said the boiler sounded like a dying dinosaur when the condensate return pump cuts on ( moaning like noise so loud you could'nt hear anything else ) and shakes the building. Wouldn't do it while I was there this morning. this is a 6 section Weil McLain, 3 gph oil, private school admin. bldg. , I'm not to experianced with steam, good at the rest, any ideas are appreciated.

Filling the Piping?

The house I just bought has oil-fired hot water heat. When the technician came to service the unit, he found the downstairs loop was airbound so he had to vent it to get the air out. In the process, a lot of the water came out too and he never put any back in. Now everything works fine, but it makes me wonder how to know when water needs to be added and where to put it in. When the heat isn't running, the expansion tank seems to be empty. It also has no cap or anyplace to add water.
