Used Cast Iron Radiators

I want to add one or two cast iron rads to my home.

I'm all fin-tube right now, and about to do some radiant but I would like to add a few cast iron rads to the basement for comfort.

What does one look for in used rads? I know to look for ones that were used for hot water systems but outside of that and knowing they are crazy heavy from lifting a few, what else should I be looking at?

Cast iron rads

Obviously you would want to get one of the correct size. Before buying, ask the seller if you can pressure test it. Pressurize to 40-50 psi with air & spray it down with soapy water or let the pressure test sit over night. Try to avoid rads with obvious numerous coats of paint. The good dealers will strip & prime them.

Pressure testing rads

You will need to plug the large pipe connections & install a schrader in the bleeder port. The schraders are available at any HVAC or plumbing supply house.
