Question Smoke/flue gas smell in basement

I have a 6 month old house and have just started to notice a sort of flue gas smell in the basement - not so much smoke - but it smells like products of combustion. It is not too strong, but noticeable.

Any reason why the smell would appear after 6 months of operation? I think one of our kids may have fiddled with the draft control and moved the slider - so I put it back to where I thought it was. Could this cause it?

I also have changed oil suppliers recently, could it be the quality of the oil?

Thanks,

Look for black soot on/around your boiler. If you see any call now for service, the unit is clogged up. I am having a problem with my Slant Fin Intrepid boiler with clogging. 2 service calls in 2 weeks for a cleaning, smoke and soot in the garage.

Smoke/fumes

Call a professional service person NOW. It may not be any thing major BUT it could be. Make the call.

I'm assuming that a 6 month old home is fully equipped with CARBON MONOXIDE detectors ?

Please say Yes...

For sure have some one look at it.. You need that barpometic damper set right for the burner to burn right.

The installer finally came over and said he could see nothing wrong with the unit, and the flame looks good. He said the gasket looked OK but has ordered another and will replace it next week.

The boiler is a top flue design. When he was over we noticed that there was hot combustion gas rising from the top of the boiler, just near where the HW supply pipe connects. Does this sound like the gasket is the issue?

Gasket

Could be the gasket. Could be the insulation (of lack of it) on the underside of the top of the jacket. Did he do any combution analysis? If not, call him back & ask WHY.
