sight glass problem

Is there any way of unpluging the lower feed to the sight glass on an old steam boiler. I am afraid that I will cause more problems if I remove the glass tube to snake out the feed. I'm thinking of blowing compressed air in from the sight glass drain. I'm not comfortable not knowing the water level in the boiler.

Sight Glass

I don't suggest using compressed air. If you are in an area where there is a lot of steam heat, most plumbing supply houses will have the sight glass, nuts, & rubber washers should you break the glass.

TIP: Before trying to remove the sight glass, spray it with soapy water or glass cleaner. It will make sliding the rubber washers much easier & reduce the chances of breaking the glass.
