I have a 2 burner Utica gas HW boiler that has an intermittent problem with the 1st burner (closest to the gas valve). Every few days the boiler ignites the gas inside the burner tube, instead of above the burner tube like the other burner. It makes a loud whistling sound, so I can hear it instantly. If I shut off the furnace at the thermostat or the switch, and relight it, the problem does not reappear for a few days. I've cleaned the orifice, with no effect. This model does not have adjustable air shutters - just open burner tubes. A service tech could not make the problem reappear, so no luck there. His opinion was it was low gas pressure, but why would that occure in the closest tube? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.... Tiger85

Last March installed brand new Weil McClain Gold WGO hot water boiler. Installer did not replace expansion tank which is strapped to the rafters above the boiler and probably sixty years old. Installer said the old expansion tanks work better than the new tanks. The new expansion tanks need replacing every couple of years, he said, but the old ones will last forever. Since day-one the new boiler has spewed water into a bucket on the floor, 1 to 2 gallons per day during heating season. It was spewing water into a bucket when he left after "completing" boiler replacement. Last week I called installer and asked him why the water was spewing. He came and drained the expansion tank which was full of water. The gate valve leading to the expansion tank is also old and original and missing its knob. He turned it with a wrench to close it, drained the expansion tank of about 8 gallons of water, then opened the gate valve. He re-set the red needle on the pressure gague with a screw driver to thirty PSI. The PSI (black needle) reads 24 PSI and the temperature reads 210 degrees when the boiler shuts down automatically. So far, no water has spewed into the bucket on the floor since he drained the tank and turned the red needle up. It has been one week. But somehow, I'm expecting an explosion any day. Please advise.
