Steam leaking from radiator shut-off valve

Hello - We came home last night to find one of our radiators leaking a lot of steam from the shut off valve. There was some steam coming from the air vent on the other side of the radiator, as well. We turned the radiator off for now. Any thoughts on what might cause this? Is it something that we can try to fix ourselves?

Thanks!!!

Valve Leak

Most valves have a nut at the top of the valve body. Try tightening this nut. If this fails, you could re-pack the valve.

Also, since you did not mention if you ever saw steam from the 'other side' before, have you checked the water level in the boiler just to rule out that it is not 'overfilled'? Over filling the boiler will also cause symptoms similar to those mentioned. You should definitely check the shaft seal though, by tightening the nut as Grady states.
