Boiler heater knocking pipes

I have a boiler with radiators for heat. Lately we have been getting loud knocks - it seems like its mostly when the heat goes on. Any ideas on what the problem might be?

Cast iron rads, fintube baseboards? What kind of radiators do you have? Are you using a programmable setback t-stat now that you weren't before?

We have cast iron radiators and we haven't changed anything with the programming. And if it makes any difference the knocking is getting progressively worse.

There is a pressure/temp gauge on the boiler, can you tell us the readings ? Is the pressure gauge steady when it 'knocks' ? or does it jump ?

It sounds like the knock is coming from the radiators, but its so random that I'm not really sure.

I'll get the readings on the pressure/temp gauge shortly, but I'm not sure if it jumps when it knocks because of the same reason above.
