when to drain boiler?

Hi - glad I found this site. I've recently purchased my first home, which has an older steam heating system. Last week my system had some water knocking in the lines (at least that's what I think it was based on research -- it was extremely loud), which has lead me to pay very close attention to water levels in my boiler. I have been draining my boiler every day or every other day in order to keep the water level at the half-way point in the glass viewing tube. It seems like I am draining it very frequently, and not having to fill it all that much. I am wondering if this is normal? Also, when is the best time to go through the drain/fill process - when the unit is idle, or while the unit has kicked on?

Thanks very much.

I'm fairly steam clueless, but can suggest Dan Holohan's "We Got Steam Heat" as an easy to read source of info for homeowners.
