Steam Radiator Re-install- Teflon tape, Dope, or nothing
What is the correct method. I figure that there was no teflon tape 100 years ago but thought I would ask here.

The correct method is the one that doesn't leak.
You may use Teflon tape, Teflon paste, some other kind of "dope" or a combination of these. Rector Seal number five is a good all-purpose paste type thread sealant.
Be sure that the threads are clean and well cut. Torn threads (from cheap foreign pipe or dull cutting dies) will give you no end of headaches and leaks.
Use a wire brush to clean off any surface rust. Do not put any sealant on the first thread or in the female thread as it will come loose and gum up the system.
If you use Teflon tape hold the pipe in your left hand with the open end outwards. Hold the tape in your right hand and wrap it around the pipe in a clockwise motion making at least two complete wraps but no more than four complete wraps. Stretch the tape to break it and smooth the end into the threads.
