I ohmed the terminals on the a-stat, not the wires I disconnected. My bad, I misunderstood what you were asking for. Man, I am tired.
I just ohmed the wires (disconnected from the a-stat) and ..infinity, no continuity, open circuit. Must have good end switches on the Z-valves. whew....

Tell me how many, and what brand/model of zone valves you have.
If you've got the 3 wire Taco valves, my plan of using the zone valve transformer won't work ... (I guess I was assuming (again!) that you had 4 wire valves with isolated end switches... but I bet you don't ... ) and I think that's why the circulator continued to run ... you are going to need a separate external transformer to power that a'stat. Either that, or replace it ...
