White Rogers Aquastat

My circulator pump on my older Bryant boiler has been running continuous lately. I would have to go down and tap the aquastat litely and the pump would shut off. So I went to the local supply store today and got a new White-Rogers model #11B02 aquastat. It looked identical to the old one Icant find a model # on the old one. I got home took the old one off and installed the new one. The new aquastat only has two screws to connect wires to and the old one had three. I hooked it up using the two and it works but not like it did before. So after troubleshooting for an hour I called the store explained what was going on and they told me that this aquastat had to be installed on the boiler return line they do not sell the aquastat that I have that installs on the supply side.

The problem I am having is the pump does not circulate right. With the old aquastat the boiler would turn on and heat up to 180degrees and then shut off. The pump would turn on shortly after and run until the water was 120degrees. The aquastat was set at 120degrees.

The new aquastat does not turn on unless I set it at 150 or above and then is shuts off once the water drops below 150.

Could someone please explain how to adjust this thing properly. I did pst this on the furnace forum by mistake and got a response. The person that responded said they have never heard of a boiler functionig like this before. Theres a good chance it is not working properly, but I would like to get it to work right. They said normally a th epump turns on with the boiler, it doesn't wait until the water temp reaches max temp.

Any advice would be great I would like to get the boiler to run properly.

Just to make sure I understand what you've got there:

This aquastat is the CIRCULATOR control ONLY, correct?

It's supposed to switch the circulator ON when the boiler water is hot enough, also correct?

In that case, you DO have the wrong control, and can not make it work properly.

The 11B02 is probably a -1 model? Those contacts BREAK ON TEMPERATURE RISE.

You require a control that MAKES on temperature rise.

Your old control had THREE contacts, of which only TWO were used. Is that correct? If so, that old control had BOTH actions available for use. One terminal was 'common' (probably marked R or painted RED), one was B or Blue, one was W or White ? And the circulator was connected to the R and W terminals ?

The R-W is a MAKE on RISE terminal, while the R-B is a BREAK on rise.

There are Honeywell models that will work. There may also be a White-Rodgers that will work... I'm looking now...

You got it exactly right.

Now I will have to try and return the one I got.

It would be greatly appreciated if you found some part numbers.

Out of curiosity the way my boiler/pump function, do you think that it is okay or should they be functioning differently?Like pump circulates whe nthe boiler is on and they both sut off together. I would like to make sure everything is working properly.

Thanks again.

Problems with website past few days...

Hope this goes through...

Without knowing more details about your system, can't say if it's good or bad... but how long has it been working this way? I would think just replacing the aquastat would be OK ... it's an acceptable way to control the circ ... to do otherwise you would probably have to re-fit several controls and massive re-wiring. Read that as $$$$$...

Here's a couple links to the White-Rodgers 1127-2 control which is probably what you had originally:

White-Rodgers catalog page (scroll to bottom)

Possible source of part:

Patriot Supply

They will probably give you a hard time about returning... electrical parts are usually not returnable... good luck with that!

Thank you, that is the exact part. I could not find a part number on it anywhere. I will have to order it tomorrow, I put the old one back on for the time being.

I would have to say the boiler has been setup this way for a long time. I purchased the home two years ago, this is the first season it has been on in 5 years. The circulator pump was replaced in 2001 (wrote in sharpie on pump). I am not even sure how old the boiler is nobody could tell me when I gave them the serial number. It does seem to work good house warms up great, and it doesn't seem to run all that much. The gas bills are decent.

Thank you again for your help.
