parallell buffer tanks

Hi- I'm installing a geothermal heat pump with radiant flooring. I have 100 gallons of buffer tank between the loops and the heat pump, in the form of two 50 gallon "domestic direct" water heaters, and intend to use the elements in them as a backup source of heat. I need to arrange an aquastat to tell the heatpump to kick on when the buffer tanks calls for heat, but have nowhere on the tank to mount a well (I'd like to keep the element in place). If I put a saddle-mount aquastat on the outlet piping, it will only respond when the zones are calling, and will call when the water in the pipe is cool, not necessarily just the tank.
Where can I mount an aquastat on a basic domestic waterheater?
