outdoor wood boilers/domestic hot water

I installed a outdoor wood boiler last fall.I went with the brazzed plate heat exchanger 20 plate in size.At first it heated the water but nothing like my water heater did.By the end of winter I shut the hot water side off and went back to propane.I am sure it has been istalled right what could be the problem?I am thinking maybe I should have went with the side arm heat exchanger instead is this a better way to go?

Is there a lot of 'crud' in the boiler water that might have plugged up the heat exchanger?

As trooper stated it may be crud but I may lean toward a flow issue as you say it did not do well from the beginning. A 20 plate heat exchanger should be plenty of heat exchanger should be somewhere around 300,000 btu's. Depending on the manufacturer the flow would be maybe 12 - 15 gpm on each side.
What size circulator do you have and what is the water pressure?
