Unhappy Rielo burner backfiring

What would cause a Rielo burner to backfire when it starts up. A friend of mine called me and said that he nearly blew the funnels off the furnace. It must have dumped a lot of oil in the pot before it caught. He is saying that every time now it starts up it backfires. Can I have the explanation of how it all works technically....I have some idea but I want it straight or at least what could be causing it.

99% of the time it is the electrode set up. Gap first, then height and distance from the nozzle CL.
