is zone valve necessary?

is zone valve necessary?

I have 2 zones baseboard hot water heating system at home. Looking at the boiler setup in the basement, I could see

+one expansion tank
+two flow checks
+two pumps

But I did not notice any zone valve right before the 'flow check'. Thus, my question, is zone valve necessary?

I'm thinking of adding a third heating zone. Should I add a zone valve when I add the third zone?

If you have a separate pump for each zone, you don't need zone valves.

As Mike said you won't need a zone valve, but you will need a pump and a way to control that pump.
