honeywell zone valve and guarddog rb-24

Hello,

I have a WM Gold CGa boiler with a honeywell r8285d transformer and a guarddog rb-24. the plumber who wired up the boiler bypassed the zone valve motor or yellow wires. he wired up the thermostart directly to the transformer and he wired up the red zone valve wires directly to the transformer. i rewired the thermostat to connect to the yellow wires of the zone valve and now it does open and close when i turn on the thermostat but the boiler doesn't start. i am having trouble finding a diagram on where to connect the red wires of the zone valve to the rb-24. can someone please help?

it's a honeywell v8043e, it has 2 yellow wires for the motor to open and close and 2 red wires that are apparently for an end switch. not sure where or how to connect those.....

Ok, I was going to draw it up, but we got a new Lap top, and I didn't get a chance to install the drawing program.

The transformer model you gave is a fan center set up.. R-Y-C-W-G on it.. ?? You have a boiler??

So, hope this works.

(R)Transformer---------Dog Guard------R(stat)

W(stat)-------------W(transformer)

W(transformer)----------Zone vale. Zone valve------C(transformer)

Thanks for helping me out, Jay... below is alittle confusing so let me tell you what's wired up now...

yes, the transformer has the colors you mentioned below. the thermostat red wire is connected to the (r) on the transformer and the white wire is wired to the yellow of the zone valve. the other yellow of the zone valve is going to the (g) of the transformer and as i said before, that is working fine. the zone valve opens when i move the thermostat...

the guarddog has 5 wires, w, r, g, and 2 yellow. the r is going to r of the transformer, the w is going to the c of the transformer, the g is grounded to the chassis, one yellow is going to the pilot light detector and to the damper hood, the other yellow is going to the spill switch and water temp control.

so, i am not sure where to connect the 2 red wires of the zone valve... are you saying one red goes to w of the transformer and one goes to c?

i sort of been working off this diagram...

NO!

Do that and when the zone valve opens you will fry the endswitch, and or the transformer.

The two red wires go to where the thermostat connections would normally go to the 8285 ... see page 27, figure 20.

http://www.weil-mclain.com/en/multim...ler_manual.pdf

For wiring of the RB24, refer to installation manual, and page 34 of the WM boiler manual. You will see that the RB24 should be wired in series, between the spill switch, and Y on the 8285.

Working or not, it isn't correct.

YES, one thermostat wire to R on the control.

YES, the White thermostat to one of the yellow ZV wires.

NO, the other yellow wire goes to C on the control.

=============

One of the RED ZV wires goes to R on the control.

The other RED ZV wire goes to G on the control.

=============

The R and W and G wires on the HoundDog are correct.

one yellow is going to the pilot light detector and to the damper hood, the other yellow is going to the spill switch and water temp control.
But this sounds wrong.

What is a "pilot light detector"? Are you talking about the switch that is mounted down by the burners? You are probably referring to the ROLLOUT switch.

The way your boiler should be wired is according to the schematic in the WM manual. There should be a wire from the SPILL SWITCH (they are saying it's black) to the Y terminal on the control. You would remove the black wire from the Y terminal, connect that to one of the YELLOW from the RB24, and the other YELLOW on the RB24 would go to the Y terminal on the control.

Theoretically, you COULD wire the RB24 Yellow wires in SERIES anywhere in that 'chain' of controls, BETWEEN any of the three existing safety switches... but not ACROSS any of them. You do not want the RB24 to 'bypass' any of the controls! It must be in SERIES. The goal is that if ANY of those safety controls opens, you want the burner to stop. Study the schematic and it will make sense.

This drawing the zone valve is wired a little differently than described above, either way will work, the only thing that's different is which side of the zone valve the thermostat is on...

I just thought of something...

You've only got ONE thermostat? and ONE zone valve?

Why is there a zone valve at all if you've only got one zone?

Or _do_ you ?

NJ Trooper,

first of all, Happy New Year and THANKS for your help!

I have 2 zone valves and 2 thermostats so do both ZV get wired to the R&G of the control?

Regarding the rb-24 yellow wires, the person who installed this obviously did not know what they were doing, i will verify 100% how it is wired when i get home. is that a way to "test" the controls to see if they shut off the boiler?

Yes, it would go something like this:

This drawing is ASSuming that your zone valves previously were powered off the transformer in the 8285 control. That transformer is large enough to power at least two, maybe three zone valves. You don't have another transformer that was originally wired to the valves, correct? That would change things if you did...

Also, keep in mind that the thermostats could be wired on either side of the zone valve, either yellow wire... it will work both ways.

Doesn't the RB24 have a 'test' button on it?
