we turn the thermostat up but the boiler does not come on but if you hit the reset button on the boiler itself it will turn on.Could the problem be in the thermostat?it is a crown boiler and the thermostat is old

Probably not the thermostat Carl... if that's an oil burner (I'm guessing it is), please do NOT keep hitting that reset button. That button only pops up when the flame on the burner has failed... so it's telling you that there is a problem with the burner lighting, or holding flame. If you keep hitting that button, you could create a buildup of unburnt oil in the combustion chamber.

How's your oil tank? almost empty? filters changed lately? when was the last time the system was serviced?

You might consider calling a techie in.

If it's not an oil burner, tell us what reset button you are pushing.
