Watts backflow preventer

I have a watts backflow preventer that is about 20 years old, (no. 9D) serial no. 8646c. I had heard somewhere that there was a recall on these things. Is that so or was I dreaming. Thanks for any help or suggestions. All of a sudden last night water started comming out of the vent pipe, no loss of pressure or anything. Looks like a very poor design but I am not an engineer. A check valve like on a summersible pump would work better than this thing.

That is the design of them.
During a backflow condition the back flowing water will force a piston to close the incoming water and allow the back flowing water to vent out to atmosphere.

A much better scenario than have boiler water feed back into your potable supply, yes ?

They are no expensive and simple to change.
