Hi, I have baseboard heat but I do not see any air relief valves on the pipes upstairs. I want to drain the air from the system - which has never been done. It makes pinging noises and water rush noises when the heat comes on. Here is a picture of my boiler. I seems like I should be able to hook up a hose to the threaded outlet, open the water in, and then open the valve where the hose is connected until the air is out. There's a relief valve of some sort in the way back. Not sure what that does though. Link to photo on flickr. I've been posting on and off about this project for awhile but it looks like now might be the time to take the next step. I also realize it's very hard to give advice with limited information but this crew has come through before so I figured I'd give it a shot again. Currently have a New Yorker Boiler fired back with a .75 nozzle, domestic water coil and 1950s convectors. System works OK but has problems Problems with current system are low DHW flow, one heating zone for entire house with 2nd floor being about 15 degrees hotter than first, large convectors take up too much wall space for a tiny house. I have two young children so DHW is going to take on a more important role. Challenges with switching now. We still haven't followed through with all insulation projects, although they are coming. I calculated the load with load-calc 4.0 and have it down to 25,000 BTUs on paper. House is Tiny and insulation levels will be somewhat overkill. First calc with zero insulation was 70k but some critical work has been done. Probably down around 50k right now with more projects done before the real cold hits. New Yorker has no problem keeping up with heat demand even on coldest days. What I'm considering. A modulating gas boiler/tank or efficient gas hot water heater. I like the looks of HTP products but MSRP on a 80G/130BTU Versa Hydro is 10G before it’s even in the house. A DIY radiant company is saying that the load will be so low that there is no reason to go beyond a quality Slate gas water heater for $1200. They push for an open loop design but that’s a non starter for me. I’m simply not interested in mixing the two beyond the heat source. Is a “water heater” really up to the task even when I get down to the design load+ head room? How much BTU/storage do you need on top of that for DHW? Any suggestions on quality modulating unit that might be a bit less than the Versa Hydro? Again, on paper it’s perfect. Options for Solar and easily adjusted high points and outdoor reset curve as I finish projects and move to 100% radiant. Thanks for any suggestions.
