Pex Piping Insulation??? Forced Hot Water
I'll be running pex from the basement to the upstairs baseboards in the near future. Is it a good idea to wrap the pex in the foam pipe wrap typically used with copper pipes? I know they make insulated pex but I'm kinda on a budget here...
thanks!

I think any insulation that fits should work OK. However, maybe it's not worth insulating? Heat loss from the PEX piping should wind up in the house, right?
It's most important to use PEX with an oxygen barrier - such as Pex-Al-Pex. Otherwise, oxygen will diffuse into the circulating water, causing corrosion of ferous materials. You may not find that type of PEX at Home Depot.

It really depends on where you run the piping. It it is run through interior walls that are sealed against airflow it would simply contribute to the heating of the living spaces as Mike pointed out. However, if the piping passes through any UNHEATED area then the piping definitely should be insulated. The better the insulation the more heat is available where you really want it.

Thanks for the replies guys! It will run through interior walls and floors only, so I'll leave it uninsulated. As said, I'm sure insulation wouldn't hurt but its probably not worth the time and effort to install. Plus those pex mounting clips mount te pex pretty close to the mounted surface so insulating it would probably be a pain.
I'll be using oxygen barrier pex from pexsupply.com. The manufacturer is Rifeng. Seems like a pretty good deal.
