If there was damage to the pump, either due to past cavitation or running the pump dry, that might account for the "new" howl. You have the valving to isolate a pump and pull the cartridge for inspection, without draining the system. That involves removing the four hold-down capscrews - a 5-minute DIY job. See if there is visible damage, particularly to the plastic impeller.

Do you have valves on both sides of the noisy pump? If so, close them to isolate the pump, and then undo the corner bolts to pull the cartridge. Inspect the impeller and the inside of the waterway. Is it clogged up with something? Does the impeller look to be worn? If so, that may be your culprit. Also, if you have 2 or more identical pumps that can be isolated, try swapping them. If the noise moves with the pump, it's a bad pump. If it stays in place, the problem is something else...
