Pilot goes out gas stays on

I have an older gas boiler for my steam system with a standing pilot. Seems the pilot is going out but the gas doesn't shut off. I have the gas line closed right now but am wondering what the problem could be.

Is this a thermocouple issue or something more? Any help is appreciated.

You did the right thing by turning the gas off. If the pilot goes out the thermocouple is supposed to shut the gas valve off and not allow it to light. If it still lights I would say you have a bad gas valve and you should call a professional.

The gas will continue to issue from the pilot burner for maybe ten to fifteen seconds after the pilot flame is extinguished. If it is any longer than that I agree with Lawrosa that the gas valve is defective and needs to be replaced.

Thanks Mike. That's the conclusion I came to poking around on Google.

Sometimes when I turn the gas valve to the pilot position from the off position, I can hear the gas turn on. This only happens intermittently. Other times I need to push the pilot button down to get the gas to flow.

I concur with the others... replace the valve if that pilot valve isn't working... no KABOOMs wanted!
