Ceiling over Gas Water heater and Furnace

Is there a general requirement to have cement board or firecode sheetrock above a gas hot water heater or furnace? A decade ago I got busted for that during an inspection of my house in New Jersey. Later I heard that they have done away with that requirement?

It may be a local thing. I know over in NC all fireplace chases must be firecoded at the 8' mark with either FP sheetrock or non flammable material, and sealed completely. I can see where a closet containing a gas appliance and open flame would be construed as a "chase", but I haven't had it come up in our area.

I've not run into anything other then what's required for clearance of combustables around the flue.

Inspector wanted X board on the walls, but didn't say anything about the ceiling! Go figure!
