Teledyne Laars Mini Therm

I have a Teledyne Laars Mini Therm boiler and I have couple of issues that I would like help on.
1) In the last month, I have had two, what sounds like explosions that "shook the house". One I heard resonate through the chimney flue (6" round) and one I heard resonate through the fresh air intakes (4" round). I smelled the presence of burnt dust after each explosion in the boiler room area. I had a service come out and I feel this problem was over the technician's head. He checked a few things and cleaned some of the debris from the bottom of the unit. After the second "explosion", I called a boiler specialist and he identified what might be the source of the problem (the second issue). He could hear and identified to me that the gas continued to "flutter" for a few seconds after it started and the ignition continued to "click" for a few seconds after the burner fired. He felt there might be a build up of gases and that is what caused the explosion. Very nice guy, knew what he was talking about and when I asked for an estimate, he opened his service book and said it would $ 980.00 to clean the unit. I told him thanks but no thanks and that I would resolve this on my own. After that, he told me he thought the Honeywell gas control unit might be on its' last leg and he would start by replacing that. I ordered one and plan to install this weekend. He also showed me how to clean the "fin tubes" inside the boiler as there was some carbon build up on that as well that the previous technician didn't clean. If anyone can add some insight to my two issues, I would greatly appreciate it. Joel

Do you have an exact model # for your unit?

$980 is a bit much for cleaning, but they are a bit complicated.

How old is the unit? That unit I believe needs cleaning every year. Had you had that done at all?

Gas valves should not flutter. And if he heard it flutter at a minimum he should have checked the water column of your gas system. Static and dynamic....

Sounds like you need a better tech then either of the ones you had.

TL Mini Therm Response

Thanks Mike for the quick reply. Here are the answers to your questions.

1. The model number is JVS 100N DI derated for high altitude locations. Heating Capacity at 83,000 BTU
2. The unit was installed in July 1996.
3. The unit has been serviced every year or two but I question whether it has been serviced thoroughly or correctly. With a mirror, you could see some carbon buildup on the bottom of the fin tubes directly above the burners.

The tech that was out the last time told me I could remove the (3) left burners and I could use a soft brush to clean the bottom of the fin tubes. Then he told me how to remove the top cover and then I could access the top of the fin tubes. He also mentioned a dry spray that I could get at a local HVAC supplier and it would help with carbon removal on the fin tubes. Hopefully my explanation makes some sense. Thanks for your help!

Whats your location? possibly update your profile.

I will look into the tech end of your unit. I have some older manuals but need to go through them. I will need to look at what they have online.

If its the Larrs unit I am thinking of, they were problematic.
