European-style combi units?

Why are they so popular in Europe and Asia, but not in the U.S.? Just a wild guess - the wall hangers might be more popular where home basements are uncommon?

I do observe that combi units are starting to be marketed a bit more in the U.S.

The european market is a more of a point of use type of need.
They would have these boilers in the room in which the fixtures are located, or close.
The units would be smaller and be for room only.
This is changing of course as they are using higher flow rates of DHW.
