cracked heat exchanger in my oil burner

I've read some info about replacing the entire oil burner if heat exchanger is cracked. My question is can the heat exchanger be replaced instead of the whole unit?

That would depend on the model.
I don't think it is cost effective to replace the heat exchanger only unless the boiler is fairly new.
You would be better off trying to find a good used boiler and adapt your burner to it if funds are tight.

Bubbi, you need to tell us make/model of the unit.

We don't even know if this is hot water or forced hot air...

How do you know the exchanger is cracked? Did a 'salesnician' tell you this?
