Want gas boiler installed, what should i ask the contractor?
Hey guys, i live in connecticut in a 1670 sqft home (all home floor). I'm on oil but want to switch to gas. Besides the heat loss calculation in the sticky in this forum, what are some questions i should ask the contractor?
Thanks!
Thanks!

looks like 41k btu boiler you would need. ( Rough estimate)
What are you heat emitters? cast, copper? Might need bypass piping.
How are you heating hot water? Indirect? Electric?
Whats the warranty? Parts, labor?
Dont oversize...most contractors size to baseboard or what is installed already... WRONG.........
Circs or zone valves?
Thats a start...let us know.

Hi, lawrosa... dang, made a mistake in what i typed, i meant my 1670 sqft house is all on 'one' floor... as for the other questions, yikes, i'm not sure, but i guess currently there's a hot water tank connected to my oil boiler and there's a heating element in the water tank, so i guess electric?
It's currently setup for 'zone' heating.

Take pics then.........
Heat emitters, indirect/hwh....ect....
Yes so a 1670 house would normally need a 41k boiler roughly... Need a heat loss calc to be sure....

The absolute first question to ask is, "Is gas available?" Next question is concerning the chimney suitability, is it structurally sound and does it need a liner. Next is what energy saving measures are going to be add to the house such as additional insulation and air sealing? Then you need to do a full heat loss calculation to determine the proper size boiler to install. Do NOT assume that the proper size boiler was originally installed, it is more likely as not twice as big as necessary and could be even bigger. Then you want to determine the domestic hot water needs and if you want a stand-alone water heater or an indirect water heater that utilizes heat from the boiler. Do NOT settle for a "tankless coil" inside the boiler as that is the WORST method in the world for making domestic hot water except for an open kettle on a wood-burning kitchen range.
